Taking its name from the Internet trend of ‘going monkmode’, meaning to isolate oneself from the outside world and abstain from pleasurable activities to increase one’s productivity, MonkMode follows the endlessly simulated behavioural loops of hooded figures planting trees in a forest. Occasionally revealing that these figures are walled within a guarded fortification while a voiceover utters motivational ‘grindset’ quotes, the piece explores contemporary anxieties around labour, AI, online hustle culture and escapism.
